Can I use scalpel blades and handles from different brands?

It’s a busy day in the gross room and time for a new scalpel blade. You grab a blade from a new box and attach it to the blade handle only to notice that the blade seems very loose and doesn’t seem safe to use. So, you check the handle and the blade to ensure they are compatible and confirm that your #4 handle and the #22 blades should work together and normally do, but this time they don’t. Why not?

Most of us have used a phone charger that may be considered a universal charger or a cheaper option. And most of us have noticed that the plug doesn’t fit quite right, or it takes much longer to charge. And there is even a risk of damaging your phone. To work most efficiently and effectively, it is best to use a charger from the same company designed specifically for your phone.

The same is true of scalpel handles and blades. While a #4 blade handle may appear to be “universal” and can work with any #22 blade, this is not always the case. When mixing and matching brands of handles and blades, you risk the chance that the blades will not fit as they should and could be unsafe to use. Blades and handles from the same manufacturer are designed to work seamlessly together and should be used together for optimal performance.

If your blades and handles aren’t fitting well together, ask the following questions:

Are the blade and handle the same brand?
Is the blade the right number and size for the handle?
The fitments (center slots) on the blades are very different in size and intended for different handles.
- #4 handle fits #22 blades
- #8 handle fits #60 and #70 blades
  *Blades will not fit with the wrong handle.
Is the blade attached the correct way with the blade edge aligned with the handle?
