Self-care in the histology lab: Burn-out is real, but so are breaks.
In the fast-paced world of histology, stress and burnout are daily realities. Short-staffing, longer hours, and growing workloads make it feel like there’s no time to breathe, let alone take a break.
But taking care of yourself is essential! Even small actions during the day (or night) can make a big difference and increase productivity.
- Take breaks!
- Check out YOGALAB – the first Yoga course tailored for Lab Professionals! This is a 10-video lesson program (5 minutes each), guiding you step by step towards greater balance and a better quality of life.
- Get up every hour and stretch, even right at your microtome
- Climb the stairs once or twice a day
- Go outside - If you can’t get outside during work, find time to get some fresh air before or after work.
- Studies show that getting outside can improve focus and memory and increase energy.1
- Take a walk, either outside or around your facility
- Stay hydrated
- Eat healthy snacks and meals – think about nuts, fresh fruit or veggies, or a salad bowl
- Wear blue light blocking glasses to help reduce eye strain from screens and overhead fluorescent lights.
- Get plenty of sleep (but not during work hours ????)
Remember to step away from the lab when you can. The work will still be there, but you’ll come back stronger and more focused. You care for patients – don’t forget to care for yourself too.
