Reset and Refresh: Beginning the year strong in the histology lab.

A new year brings a fresh start, and for histotechs it’s the ideal time to reset, reorganize, and prepare your lab for smooth, efficient operations. Beginning the year with a clear plan doesn’t just boost productivity, it helps maintain accuracy, compliance, and safety throughout your lab operations. These early-year tasks may feel small, but they play a big role in maintaining accuracy, safety, and efficiency, and can save you from headaches later on.

1. Update Documentation, Forms, and Templates

  • Review requisition forms, QC forms, internal documentation
  • Verify electronic templates in your LIS
  • Update dates for the new year

2. Review and Organize SOPs

  • Confirm all SOPs are current and approved
  • Archive outdated versions according to your document control policy
  • Make sure staff can easily access and understand SOPs

3. Inventory and Reagent Management

  • Perform an inventory check for reagents and supplies
  • Dispose of expired reagents and chemicals following SDS/SOP procedures
  • Update inventory and reorder low-stock items

4. Equipment Maintenance

  • Verify all Preventative Maintenance (PM) and calibrations are up to date and documented
  • Schedule any pending PMs or service

5. Quality Control and Compliance

  • Audit QC logs for completeness and signatures
  • Organize records for potential inspections
  • Verify training and competency records, including continuing education and certifications

6. Chemical Storage and Safety

  • Check chemical and reagent storage for compliance with safety guidelines
  • Confirm proper labeling and segregation of incompatible substances

7. Workspace Organization

  • Declutter workstations by removing unnecessary tools and supplies
  • Clean surfaces to maintain a safe and efficient workspace

8. Digital Data Management

  • Back up all digital pathology images and reports securely
  • Review and update software licenses
  • Organize shared drives and remove redundant files

Remember, this isn’t a full list. Every lab has its own priorities, so there may be other tasks worth tackling. Use this as inspiration to create your own checklist and set your team up for a smooth, successful year ahead. A little effort means big wins later!
